Holy Week is here already! In Spanish it is called Semana Santa and especially the celebrations which take place in the South of Spain are worldwide popular. In Barcelona isn’t very active, also because of the cosmopolitan nature of the city.
For backpackers it is a very good occasion to see a quieter version of the Catalan capital, especially talking about traffic, as most of the residents take the opportunity of 4 days bank holidays to leave the city. Of course this doesn’t mean Barcelona will be empty… loads of tourists are coming every year to supply the amount of locals who are leaving!
Even if religious processions are not the main attraction here, you will still be able to assist to a couple of very good ones on Holy Friday afternoon. One of them leaves from Sant Agustí Church (in the Raval district) and from Sant Jaume Church (in the Gothic district), both of them at 17.00hrs.
On Easter day, you can’t miss the traditional Mona de Pascua cake, which you will find in every bakery, in a variety of shapes. The tradition says that the godfather or godmother has to make to for his/her godchildren. As during Lent period Catholic shouldn’t eat meat and eggs, these were saved for Easter and this is why the mona has boiled eggs in it. Usually they are between 2 and 12, depending on the god-child age.

If you are staying at the Urbany Hostel Barcelona another thing you can’t miss in these days is the Easter Paella Party we are having on Saturday 11th at 20.00hrs on our 3rd floor! For sure we will have a great time!!
